FALKIRK 6 HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN 0

Saturday May 1st 1993 at Brockville Park

Falkirk hit top-form in a match which was vital to their survival hopes. They played some brilliant football and destroyed Hearts who had been in fifth position at kick-off time. It was incredible to see and Baptie’s return was straight out of a boy’s comic book. He had been out injured for months but manager Jim Jefferies had arrange for him to play centre forward in a bounce game against Gala Fairydean in the midweek. The announcement of his return was greeted with great cheers and the popular player was to give the performance of his career. Hearts didn’t know what hit them and their fans were furious long before the final whistle. Hearts fielded a side with seven full Scottish caps in the lineup.

Early chances had fallen to McAllister and Duffy before the goals finally came.

34 minutes – David Weir headed home an in-swinging corner by McCall. 1-0.

38 minutes – Duffy headed another McCall corner off the bar and as Falkirk claimed a goal, Wishart made sure by hitting home the rebound. 2-0.

The team deserved their standing ovation at half time. Hearts nightmare continued early in the second half and soon Hearts fans were heading for the exits.

47 minutes – Crawford Baptie met a McAllister cross and flicked the ball past Smith. 3-0.

54 minutes – Brian Rice ran through the Hearts defence to score with ease. 4-0.

57 minutes – Crawford Baptie scored again hitting home the rebound after a Duffy header from a Rice cross came back off the bar. 5-0.

The Watson Street end was emptying rapidly and both abuse and scarves were being hurled in the direction of the Hearts dugout.

71 minutes – Smith failed to gather a McAllister shot and Cadette followed up to score. 6-0.

By this time the level of abuse directed toward Joe Jordan had reached an incredible level. The trackside was littered with maroon and white scarves and there were very few Hearts fans left in the ground at full-time. Falkirk fans listened for the Motherwell result – Hibs had won 1-0 and a last minute reprieve was still possible.
