Falkirk Football Club is delighted to announce that Liam Henderson has signed a two-year contract extension.
The deal, which adds to his current deal running until 2026, will keep the 28-year-old in the navy blue until 2028.
Having been at the club as a young player, joining in 2016 and leaving in 2018, the defender returned to the club as John McGlynn’s first signing as Bairns’ Boss in May 2022.
Playing mostly in defence across his first year at the club, he was a huge part of the team that made it to a Scottish Cup Semi-Final. His second year saw a new deployment in the centre of the park as a mainstay for the majority of the Invincible and title winning 2023/24 League One campaign, before making the centre half position his own in the last 12 months as he only missed one game and scored 6 times across Falkirk’s winning Championship season.
Manager John McGlynn said on Liam’s long-term commitment to Falkirk:
“Liam is one of the most improved players at the football club since joining three years ago. He had a really good first season, before being an integral part of the Invincible year, and played an even bigger part last season where he played nearly every game at centre back, with two or three games in midfield, one notably being the Queen’s Park game, where he did exceptionally well and got a goal in the game with a great header.
“We had injury issues with the centre backs in the early part of last season with regards to Tom not getting back as quickly as we expected, and Coll not being fit for the start of preseason. Liam was left to hold the fort, and did exceptionally well, striking a good partnership with whoever he played with, from Keelan at the start of preseason, to Luke Graham when he came in, and Coll and Tom later in the season.
“Liam really had an outstanding season, you can see that he’s now gained so much experience. He’s at an age where he’s learnt the game really well, while he continues to learn, of course. He’s good for myself, and he’s good in the dressing room. You see the enthusiasm and the energy that he brings that fans love and we’re absolutely delighted to have him here until 2028.
“Well done to Liam, he richly deserves this improved and extended contract. We look forward to working with him over the next two years.”
Liam Henderson added:
“I’m buzzing, I knew about it towards the end of last season, but the Gaffer and I didn’t want to talk too much about it at the time, when our focus was to get to the Premiership. It’s been in the back of my head and it’s dragged on, but I’m delighted to finally get it over the line.
“I’ve loved my time here, it’s been amazing working with the Gaffer, the backroom staff, and obviously the other players. It’s been a good three years, now there’s another three years to go, so I hope I can do my best during that time.”
