For the third weekend running The Navy Blue Train remains at The Falkirk Stadium, as we take on Ayr United in a huge top of the table clash!
Kick-off is at 3pm, Saturday 15th February.This week we prepare for our third consecutive home game in the William Hill Championship as we host second placed Ayr United at The Falkirk Stadium.
The Bairns are on a high after last Saturday’s incredible win against Partick Thistle. It was a game that had it all; seven goals, a red card, and a fairytale homecoming for one of our own.
With returning fan favourite, Scott Arfield, making his second club debut after having been away for 15 years, the anticipation amongst the 6,000 home fans was at an all-time high, and they lifted the roof off the stadium when Arfield had the ball in the net after 45 seconds.
By the 24th minute, however, the visitors had turned the game around. Two counter attacks against the run of play resulted in good finishes from Logan Chalmers and Brian Graham. Nine minutes later, the scores were level again. Gary Oliver threaded the needle with a ball through to Keelan Adams, who was then brought down in the box by Terry Ablade. Brad Spencer took the spot kick, hoping to net his seventh goal of the season, but David Mitchell was equal to his effort. Despite saving the penalty, the ball was parried back into the box, where Gary Oliver reacted quickest to knock the ball into the net.
The first half drama didn’t end there. Just two minutes after conceding, Brian Graham saw red for a second bookable offence when he tripped up Luke Graham. Three minutes later, Falkirk had the lead again through none other than Scott Arfield.
Arfield capped off his dream return to Falkirk with his hat-trick goal on the hour mark. This time it was a Partick Thistle handball in the area that prompted the referee to point to the spot, and it was Arfield who converted. Substitute Leon McCann then rounded off the scoring with a terrific header in the 76th minute.
It was an impressive way to bounce back from the previous weekend’s disappointing defeat, and the three points moved The Bairns back to top spot in the league.
Ayr have been on a terrific run of form recently that has seen them move up from third in the table. The Honest Men found themselves top of the standings last weekend after a run of seven league games without defeat, thanks in no small part to their number nine, George Oakley, who has scored seven goals in his last six league games. The Ayrshire side didn’t feature in the league last weekend, instead hosting Premiership side Hibernian in the Scottish Cup. The Honest Men gave a good account of themselves, but it was the visitors who progressed to the next round thanks to an 87th minute goal from Hibs defender, Rocky Bushiri.
Falkirk currently sit two points clear of Ayr United, and a win will see their lead at the top extended.
