Introduction
Falkirk were denied their first win of the 2026/27 season as Michael Forbes equalised late in stoppage time for Dundee United.
The Bairns had taken an early lead through Jacob Murrell, who scored his first league goal for Falkirk since his summer transfer.
Dundee United struck late on though, with Forbes equalising in the final two minutes of stoppage time.

Attack
Falkirk had 12 shots in the match, four of them on target, and led from the fourth minute when Jacob Murrell headed home from a corner.
Ryan Strain (0.30 xG) and Ethan Ross (0.31 xG) also tested Dundee United goalkeeper Jack Walton before the quarter-hour mark, both from open play.
Almost all of Falkirk’s threat came in that early spell. Of the team’s 1.31 total expected goals, 1.27 arrived in the first half and just 0.04 after the break. Dundee United’s total for the match was 3.48, more than double Falkirk’s, built from 26 shots to Falkirk’s 12.
The breakdown by flank tells the same story. Falkirk had 15 attacks coming down the left, worth only 0.01 expected goals between them, against 14 down the right worth 0.71 and five through the centre worth 0.59.
Defence
Falkirk did the bulk of the game’s defending. They made 67 interceptions to Dundee United’s 49 and 43 clearances to their 30, and their PPDA (Passes per Defensive Action) of 11.6 – meaning a defensive action for every 11.6 opponent passes – points to a side sitting off rather than pressing high, against Dundee United’s figure of 6.7.
That work still left Scott Bain facing nine shots, four of them on target. He made eight saves, five of them reflex stops, the best coming from Daniel Bennie’s header two minutes into first-half stoppage time, the game’s highest-rated chance at 0.91 expected goals, and from Jesse Randall’s header just after the hour at 0.66.
Falkirk won 84 of their 176 duels and 32 of 60 aerial duels, both a touch under half, and 26 of 50 defensive duels specifically.
Possession
Falkirk had 39% of the ball to Dundee United’s 61, and their average spell in possession lasted eight seconds against United’s eleven. Passing accuracy read 68% against 76%, and only 17 of 39 passes aimed at the final third found their man.
Progressive passes tell a similar story. Falkirk completed 26 of 40, the same 65% success rate as Dundee United, but from far fewer attempts. Falkirk produced eight shot assists over the match to United’s 17, and only 12 of their 114 possessions reached the opponent’s penalty area, 11%, against United’s 22% from 133. Possession did not translate into much going forward.
Set pieces
Falkirk won five corners, with two of those leading to a shot and the Jacob Murrell goal in the fourth minute came from one of those corners. Dundee United’s equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time arrived the same way, with Michael Forbes heading in from a corner of their own.
Ryan Strain served all five of Falkirk’s corners and added four crosses from open play, one of them accurate. Falkirk’s crossing was otherwise sparse: 11 attempted in total, three completed.
Players
Jacob Murrell scored Falkirk’s goal and had both his shots on target from two attempts, while winning 11 of 24 duels in his 68 minutes on the pitch. Ryan Strain was involved in almost everything Falkirk did going forward: 73 actions, an expected assists value of 0.27, and every one of the side’s corners served from his boot.
Finley Barbrook covered the most defensive ground of anyone in Falkirk colours, with 65 actions in the match, though he won only 3 of his 17 individual duels.
Scott Bain’s eight saves made him the busiest Falkirk player by outcome if not by touches, and his stop from Daniel Bennie’s 0.91 expected goals header was the single most important defensive contribution of the afternoon.
For Dundee United, Michael Forbes claimed the equaliser and topped the match for total actions with 105, 78 of them successful, while Daniel Bennie was involved in the game’s three best chances without finding the net himself.
Conclusion
Falkirk led inside four minutes from a set piece and had to hold on until the very end of stoppage time before Dundee United levelled from one of their own.
In between, Dundee United had almost three times Falkirk’s expected goals and by far the greater share of the ball, so the underlying picture of the 90 minutes points to a point that was hard-fought throughout.
