This week we prepare for a huge game against Hibernian, in which a win would see us climb to fifth in the table.
The Bairns got back to winning ways last weekend with yet another win against Motherwell, meaning we have taken 10 from a possible 12 points from Jens Berthel Askou’s team this season. Falkirk were desperate to turn their recent form around with the possibility of a European spot at stake, and their performance on Saturday reflected that. John McGlynn’s side dominated much of the game, creating numerous chances that could have seen them out of sight at half time.
The opening goal finally came for Falkirk in the 63rd minute. A brilliant move saw Ben Broggio play a perfect ball through from the edge of the centre circle to put Henry Cartwright one-on-one. The midfielder, who had been substituted onto the pitch just 90 seconds prior, timed his run perfectly and beat Ward at his near post with a composed left-footed finish.
The hosts piled on the pressure for the remainder of the match, but resolute defending from The Bairns ensured they took all three points. Falkirk now sit just two points behind Hibs.
Our visitors this weekend have one just once in their last seven league games and have suffered three straight defeats. They hosted Celtic at Easter Road last Sunday, hoping to strengthen there position in fifth, while putting a spanner in the works of Celtic’s title ambitions.
It wasn’t the ideal start for Hibs, who went down to 10 men, for the second week running, after just 21 minutes when Jamie McGrath saw red for a dangerous tackle. Celtic took full advantage of the extra man, scoring 20 minutes later through Daizen Maeda. Despite being down a man Hibernian fought back and managed to score an equalising goal in the third minute of injury time before the break.
After holding out for another 27 minutes, the hosts conceded again, this time Kelechi Iheanacho was the scorer. The goal proved to be the match winner as Celtic kept hot on Hearts’ heels.
